SAMPLE SOLUTIONS

 1. A steel cable 50 m (a = 12 x 10-6/ oC) in length is exposed to a temperature range from

     -15 oC. What is the increase in length of the cable?

                D L =  aLo(DT) = (12 x 10-6/ oC)(50 m)[40 oC - (-15o C)]

            DL = 3.3 x 10-2 m

 2. A tungsten filament in a lamp is 40 cm long. Assuming that the average value of alpha

     over this temperature range is 6 x 10-6/ oC, how long will the filament be at 2,600o C?

            DL =  aLo(DT)

            DL = 0.6192 cm;

 3. An ordinary glass (a = 3 x 10-6/  oC) bottle is filled to the brim with Hg (b = 9 x 10-6/oC) at

     10 oC. If the volume of the Hg is 100 cc at 10o C, how much Hg will overflow (or more

     could be added) if the temperature of the glass and mercury is changed to 90o C?

            D Vglass =  bVo(DT)  ;  b = 3(a) = 3(3 x 10o C)

                         = (9 x 10-6/ oC)(100 cc)(90o C - 10o C)

                        = 7.2 x 10-2 cc

            D VHg =  bVo(DT)

                     =  (18 x 10 -5/ oC)(100 cc)(90o C - 10o C)

                    = 1.44 cc

            Volume(overflow) =  D VHg - DVglass

                                    = 1.44 cc - 7.2 x 10-2 cc = 1.368 cc
