THE PHYSICAL AND
CHEMICAL NATURE OF COMPOUNDS AND MIXTURES LAB
(Word)(html) – Physical vs. chemical properties, physical vs. chemical changes are delineated and differentiated in this lab. The properties of copper, magnesium, iodine, iron, and sulfur are examined, and are used to differentiate between physical and chemical changes as these substances are exposed to heat.

This page is a follow-up to the problems at the end of “The Physical and Chemical Nature of Compounds and Mixtures Lab”, where you must interpret the “recipe” of a chemical equation. You must also use the “unit-cancellation” method to predict the mass (grams) of the chemicals involved when given the number of moles.

Elements’ Names and Symbols Worksheet (Word)(html)– A list of Latin names for 11 metal elements, a list of 37 symbols where the element’s name, physical state (solid, liquid, gas), and distinction as metal or non-metal are required.
Elements Symbols/Names Quiz 1 Practice (Word) – A section of several multiple choice problems where each problem contains the names of three elements and their symbols, where you must identify one symbol that is in error. A second section has several multiple choice problems where each problem contains the symbols of three elements, where one name is in error.
Element’s Names and Symbols Test Review (Word)(html) – Must write the symbol or the name for a large selection of elements.

Teacher Notes: Organization of Anions on the Periodic Table (Adobe pdf) – this worksheet will be completed in class. Print an additional copy for yourself, for the purpose of practicing for the evaluation on this worksheet. The evaluation (Eval. 2) will be an exact copy of this worksheet, where you will have to complete it in class, using your knowledge of anion construction rules.

Naming Compounds Worksheet (Word)(html)– A list of names of ionic compounds, where the correctly written formula is required.
Naming Compounds Worksheet Solutions (Adobe pdf: page 1, page 2, page 3) – The correct oxidation numbers and formula for each of the ionic compounds listed on the left column of this worksheet is provided. Cover the “Compound” and “Oxidation Number” columns with a sheet of blank paper, where only the “Formula” column is visible. Randomly choose a formula, and use the “undo criss-cross trick” method, your memory, and the Periodic Table to write the symbol of the positive and negative ion, including their oxidation numbers. Pull the paper aside to reveal the middle column and check the accuracy of your work. This practice is essential for Naming Compounds Quiz 1.

Naming Compounds Quiz 1 Review, Version 2 (Word)(html) – A practice quiz which has the same format as the real quiz, with a least five sections:
Given the formulas, you must complete the name for three compounds by writing the –ate, -ite, or –ide ending.
Write the correct oxidation number above the symbol, given the formula for at least 7 ionic compounds, where either the cation or the anion is underlined.
Given the formula for the cation of selected transition metals (iron, copper, mercury, lead, tin), complete the Latin name by writing the suffix “-ic” or “-ous”.
Given the formula for three ionic compounds, complete the modern name by writing the Roman numeral within the parentheses.
Given the formula for three ionic compounds, write the correct formula.
Naming Compounds Quiz 2 Review (Word)(html) + Solutions (Word)(html) – A practice quiz which is composed of two sections:
Given at least 10 names of ionic compounds, where you must write the symbol for the cation and anion including the appropriate oxidation number, then write the complete formula.
Given at least 5 formulas of ionic compounds, write the complete name.
Naming Neutral Molecular Compounds (Word) (html) – This exercise takes problems 1.72 and 1.74 in the text (page 45) where you are given the names of neutral molecular compounds and you must write the corresponding formula; and where you are given the formula of a molecular compound and must write the corresponding name. Also included is problem 1.70 which gives you the name or formula of “hydrate” ionic compounds, and you must write their corresponding name or formula.

SEPARATION OF THE COMPONENTS OF A MIXTURE LAB – This is a commercially written lab which requires you to use differences in physical properties to separate a mixture of sand (silicon dioxide), salt (sodium chloride), and ammonium chloride. The goal of each lab group is to isolate each component of the mixture, then calculate the percent by mass of each component.
4. Periodic Table
Interactive Periodic Table (Chemical & Engineering News, 2003 American Chemical Society) - A highly visual interactive Periodic Table whose colors indicate alkali and alkaline earth metals, transition metals, main-group elements, noble gases, lanthanide and actinide elements.
